Where
we are:
We are located in tiny Ojuki Village, part of the fishing village cluster called Saganoseki, just east of the city of Oita, in Oita prefecture, on Kyushu island, the southernmost large island of Japan.
This map shows Ojuki Village where our retreat is located indicated with a red arrow, in relationship to Oita city (directly west), and the Oita airport (northwest across the water). Pan out to explore the region...

how to get here
 |
 |
There are a few different ways to get here;
by air and/or rail.
In major cities many airport staff and train station staff can help you in English.
VIA TOKYO:
Most people traveling from overseas will arrive in Japan at Tokyo's Narita international airport.
VIA KYOTO or FUKUOKA
In some cases international flights may arrive direct to Kyoto or Fukuoka.
Kyoto has a large international airport and is slightly closer to Zen Retreat than Tokyo reducing travel time and air or rail fares. Direct flights to Kyoto from western countries are less common though.
Fukuoka receives some international flights direct from other Asian countries. If you are visiting Zen Retreat from another Asian country, inquire first about the availability of a direct flight into Fukuoka, then Kyoto, then Tokyo. Take the (1.5 hour train ride from Fukuoka to Oita) |
By Rail:
FROM TOKYO; take a bus or metro to Tokyo train station and buy a ticket to Oita station. You will take a "bullet" train (high-speed) to Hakata station (Fukuoka city) where you will change trains to Oita. Total travel time from Tokyo to Oita is about 6-8 hours.
FROM OTHER CITIES IN JAPAN; Japan has an excellent rail system which is one of the most comfortable, fast, and efficient in the world. It should be easy and affordable to find a route that suits your needs. Rail travel also provides an opportunity to see other cities on the way to Zen Retreat. Tokyo and Kyoto are of special interest.
Once in Oita, we can come and pick you up, or...
If you speak a little Japanese, or if you are feeling adventurous, you can take the train from downtown Oita to Kozaki station (5 stops), which takes about half an hour. This part of the journey is short but a little harder to navigate if you speak no Japanese and are unfamiliar with the Japanese train system. Kozaki station is then only a few minutes by car from Zen Retreat. From here you may call us to pick you up or take a taxi to the retreat.
By Air:
Tokyo has 2 airports, Narita and Haneda. Narita which is quite far from the city center and deals with international flights, and Haneda which is much closer to Tokyo city center and deals with domestic flights.
Domestic Flights:
All considered, there are 2 cities close enough to Zen Retreat to consider flying into; Oita or Fukuoka.
Your travel time and costs will be similar, therefore we suggest taking the least expensive airfare.
Oita is the closest large city to Zen Retreat but Narita (Tokyo international) does NOT have flights to Oita, only Haneda (Tokyo domestic) does. This means you have to take the bus for one hour from Narita to Haneda to get your flight to Oita.
From Tokyo Narita airport you should take one of the frequent busses to Tokyo Haneda airport (about 1 hour drive time), and then from Haneda take one of the frequent flights from Haneda to Oita. From Oita airport you take the bus into downtown Oita, or we may be able to come and pick you up.
Fukuoka is a 1.5 hour bus or train ride from Oita. The advantage, however, is that there are flights directly from Narita international airport in Tokyo since Fukuoka is a major travel hub. This way you avoid the bus between airports in Tokyo.

VIA KYOTO OR OSAKA ONLY:
Some international flights arrive in Kyoto or Osaka direct.
VIA FUKUOKA ONLY:
A few nearby Asian countries offer direct flights to Fukuoka city. If you are flying into Fukuoka, the main train station is Hakata and there is a subway directly from the airport to Hakata station that is well indicated in English. Many airport staff and Train Station ticket booth staff can help you in English.
